Naming History
Queen of Bermuda has a very special place in our hearts because in many ways it is the reason Simon calls Bermuda home. Queen of Bermuda was the sister ship to the Ocean Monarch which regularly called at Bermuda and on which Simon’s mother and father met. These two ships were magnificent luxury liners of the Furness Bermuda Line and built by Vickers Armstrong Ltd in England in the 1930s. They were beautifully proportioned vessels with three funnels, and they were amongst the elite ships of their day. In 1939 the Second World War broke out and the two luxury liners were requisitioned for war duties. The Monarch of Bermuda served as a troopship while the Queen of Bermuda became an Armed Merchant Cruiser and later a troopship.
Sadly the Queen of Bermuda was irreparably damaged during her post war re-fit but Queen of Bermuda continued to entertain passengers well into the 1960s when she was eventually retired from service.
