Golden dreams for ‘Flora Of Bermuda’
Simon Scupham of Bermuda Racing has chosen a special name for the special Dark Angel filly.
“We are delighted to have purchased such an exciting filly from the recent breeze-up sale at Goffs UK and have decided to name her ‘Flora of Bermuda’. This is of course a nod to the unique flora found in Bermuda. More importantly, though, it is a recognition of the achievements of Dame Flora Duffy who is held in such high esteem in Bermuda.”
Dame Flora Duffy is the current Olympic and World Triathlon Champion and to this day, the only Bermudian to ever have won an Olympic gold medal. To have risen to be the best in the world from a population of only 60,000 is no small feat, so it’s no wonder she is held in such high esteem. If a little bit of Flora’s gold dust were to rub off on our filly that would be just wonderful.
Given its sub-tropical climate, fertile soil and adequate rainfall Bermuda’s flora is abundant and varied with over 8,000 species recorded despite the island’s small size and isolation. The whole island has the appearance of a carefully tended garden with colourful hedges of hibiscus and oleander and flowering plants such as bougainvillaea, poinsettia, morning glory, passion flower and Bermudiana.
‘Flora Of Bermuda’ is in training at Kingsclere Park Stables and so far the reports have been very positive from trainer Andrew Balding.
