Flora narrowly denied in the Scurry
Oh it was so close for Flora Of Bermuda who put in a blinding performance in the Listed Scurry Stakes at Sandown (5f).

Today Flora proved herself as a filly more than capable at winning at stakes level. Breaking from stall 7 of 8 (standside), our 3-year-old filly broke very well, however it was the bad luck of her drawn stall that didn’t help her endeavours. With a high-cruising speed and drawn on the outer edge of her counterparts, Flora, with no options to travel forward through traffic, inevitably had to take a pull to be able to drop out behind and switch to the outside, when the rest of the field were starting to go through the gears. At this stage, the eventual winner was kicking for home with already a 4-length lead, yet the determined Flora demonstrated her blistering turn-of-foot, powering for home at this later stage to only be narrowly denied by a head on the finishing line. An incredible performance over 5 furlongs.
It was a huge step forward from Flora’s debut run as a three-year-old. Today she broke well and ran a very strong race - in what was an agonisingly close second. You can’t help but think given her chance to run her race, this could have been her grasp at that bit of stakes silverware. No doubt about it she further stamped her class today, seizing that second bit of black-type. With it still being early in the season, there will be many more opportunities where we can dream of clinching that stakes win that she deserves.
It was very nearly the fairytale for what was a special day for Bermuda Racing as we debuted our new silks. Adapted from our previous silks, the new design features a triangle motif on the front and back of the jockey’s body, which is a nod to Bermuda through recognition with the ‘Bermuda Triangle’. As ever with the ethos of Bermuda Racing, the names of our horses, as well as our brand, is to pay homage to one of the most beautiful and special places on earth, Bermuda.
Simon Scupham of Bermuda Racing gave his post race analysis following Flora Of Bermuda’s run in the Scurry - “Our Flora is back, putting in a fine performance to come a ‘head’ second in the Listed Scurry Stakes at Sandown today! She behaved impeccably in the prelims and got out of the stalls without any issue. Unfortunately her draw did her no favours finding herself blocked in through the first half of the race. Oisin managed to pull her out wide from the rear of the field at the 2f pole and she finished like a train. There is no doubt Flora would have been a worthy winner if she was able to have another stride or two! Much to look forward to!”
